A second visit does not always mean a new permit
If you already hold a Chinese temporary driving permit, do not assume that leaving China automatically makes it a single-use document. The Ministry of Commerce's 2024 guide for foreign business visitors says a temporary permit can be used for multiple entries during its validity, without a new application merely for each entry. Shanghai traffic police also confirmed repeated-entry use within the validity period in a June 2025 reply.
The important qualification is that your permit must still be valid. This article addresses reuse of an existing permit, not a first application or permission to keep driving after expiry. If your circumstances have changed, ask the issuing authority to check your particular document before you reserve a vehicle.
Read the issued dates, not the maximum advertised period
Shanghai's current English guide distinguishes a three-month temporary permit for a short stay from a longer period that can reach one year for longer stays. A possible maximum is not an automatic entitlement on your second trip. Read the actual start and end dates on the permit you were given.
Write down the dates you intend to drive, including the day you return the car. If any driving falls outside the issued period, ask what application is needed before that day. Do not treat a new flight booking, a fresh entry stamp or a longer rental contract as an extension of the old permit.
Check what changed between visits
Compare the documents you used for the first application with the ones you will carry now. A renewed foreign license, replacement passport, changed name or changed license restriction deserves a specific enquiry. Do not assume that a new document with similar details can simply be paired with an old translation or permit.
Describe the change without sending a large bundle of identity documents to an unverified recipient. Start with the issuing office, the type of document replaced and the relevant dates. If evidence is requested, confirm the official submission channel and supply only the material needed for that question.
Keep driving permission separate from entry permission
A driving permit is not a visa or permission to stay in China. For a repeat visit, confirm your entry and stay arrangements through the appropriate immigration channel separately. A permit's printed expiry date should not be used to calculate how long you may remain in the country.
Likewise, acceptance by a rental booking system does not settle the validity of a driving document. Ask the rental branch to check the documents required for your actual collection date, but direct questions about the permit itself to the issuing authority. Record which party answered which question.
Prepare the documents for the new journey
Shanghai guidance says to carry the temporary permit together with the foreign driving license and its Chinese translation. It also says to carry the rental contract when driving a rented vehicle. Before leaving for a return trip, check that the originals and the relevant translation are still available and readable.
Keep a private travel note identifying the permit's issuing office, validity and permitted vehicle category. This note helps you ask precise questions; it is not a replacement driving document. Avoid putting passport numbers or complete document scans into public travel groups.
Ask one precise reuse question
A useful message is: I received a temporary driving permit from your office and plan to return on these dates. The permit expires on this date. My passport and foreign license are unchanged, or the following document has changed. Can I use this permit for the proposed driving dates, and is any further procedure required?
Keep the answer and its date with your travel notes. If the answer is conditional or you cannot resolve a document mismatch, arrange alternative transport until the position is clear. Do not rely on another traveler's successful return visit as approval of your own circumstances.

For a RIDE CN document-preparation enquiry, use https://chinadriverslicense.com/contact-us/ and explain that you already have a temporary permit. State the planned driving dates and whether any source document has changed. Confirm the scope of any translation or support service before ordering; the issuing authority decides whether your permit can be used.
