Start with the right kind of digital document
An electronic Chinese driving license is not a photograph of a foreign license, a translation PDF or a picture of your Chinese card. The question here is how a holder of an existing Chinese driving license obtains and checks the official electronic credential. Installing an app does not itself complete a license application or create permission to drive.
Keep driver and vehicle documents separate when reading instructions. A vehicle license identifies a vehicle; the driving license concerns the driver. If a tutorial asks you to select a registered vehicle, pause and check that it describes the document you actually need. This guide does not establish an electronic version of a temporary driving permit.
Check the driving record before troubleshooting the phone
Beijing Traffic Management Bureau's electronic-license instructions, checked on 10 October 2026, describe applications through the official Traffic Management 12123 app for eligible holders of Beijing-issued driving licenses. They require an appropriate license status and exclude records that cannot lawfully be used normally, including revoked, cancelled, locked or stopped records.
A failed electronic application therefore is not always a camera or phone problem. First identify whether the message concerns account access, identity matching, a portrait or the underlying driving record. If it describes a restriction or an unresolved status, ask the traffic authority to explain it. Reinstalling software or repeatedly submitting different details does not resolve a legal restriction.
Match your actual identity document to the account
Beijing's separate 12123 registration instructions include identity-document options for foreign nationals, diplomats and foreign permanent residents. The published passport example selects the foreign-national identity category. Treat that as guidance to choose the appropriate identity type, not an instruction to force every applicant into a mainland resident-ID field.
Compare the document associated with your Chinese driving record with the one you currently hold. If an earlier passport number remains in the record, explain the mismatch through the official service route. Do not shorten a passport number, replace letters with digits or use someone else's identity because an input box rejects your first attempt.
- Which document type is selected?
- Does its number correspond to the driving record?
- Can you receive the account's verification messages yourself?
- What is the exact stage and wording of any error?
Distinguish submission from issuance
After submitting a request, read the result in the official app. Beijing's instructions distinguish application progress from a successfully issued electronic license that can be viewed in the electronic-documents area. Do not conclude that the process has finished merely because the portrait uploaded or a screen acknowledged the request.
When a credential appears, inspect the identity details, vehicle category and validity information. If any field seems wrong, keep a private note of the discrepancy and use official support. Beijing's guidance provides an in-app feedback route for problems. Do not publicly post the full credential or its verification information while seeking general technical advice.
Prepare for the real-world check
Beijing's current instructions describe online verification of a valid electronic driving license during traffic-management procedures, driving and vehicle-rental activities. This does not mean that every rental transaction has identical supporting-document requirements. Ask the specific business which identity documents it needs and how it will verify the official credential.
Before relying on your phone, make sure you can open the official credential and that the device has sufficient charge. Do not substitute an edited image or assume an old screenshot proves the current record. Treat a saved image as a private reference only, and confirm the accepted presentation method if connectivity or account access is uncertain.
Recheck after the underlying license changes
Beijing's electronic-license instructions say to re-apply when the permitted vehicle type, validity period or issuing authority changes. This is particularly relevant after another transaction has changed the Chinese license. Check the electronic credential against the newly confirmed record instead of assuming a previously successful application remains the final step forever.
For a document-preparation question, contact RIDE CN through https://chinadriverslicense.com/contact-us/ and state that you already hold a Chinese driving license. Describe the issue without sending account passwords or verification codes. Available assistance must be confirmed; an intermediary cannot determine your driving status or override the official identity-verification process.
