A portrait is not a scan of your foreign license
When an application asks for a driver's photograph, it usually means a portrait of you, not a photograph of the driving-license card. These files have different purposes. Keep the requested portrait separate from the document images supplied for translation so the wrong attachment is not sent to an office or photographer.
Before ordering prints, identify the city, the exact service and the submission channel. A first application, conversion, renewal and information-change procedure can request different quantities or formats. The examples below come from Beijing's official pages checked on 3 October 2026; they should not be treated as one universal upload specification for every Chinese city.
Recognize the two different Beijing specifications
Beijing's information-change guidance describes paper portraits measuring 32 by 22 millimetres, with a white background. It specifies a head width of 14–16 millimetres and head length of 19–22 millimetres, with the image taken within the previous six months. Its instructions also require a natural, unobstructed and undistorted likeness.
A separate Beijing digital-photo page specifies a transparent-background PNG, 520 pixels wide by 756 pixels high, no larger than 300 KB, without facial enhancement. These are different specifications. Do not substitute a white-background print file for a transparent PNG, or order transparent paper prints, simply because both pages concern driving-license photographs.
Ask which specification applies to your transaction
Show the receiving office or its official upload screen to the photographer. Ask whether the task calls for printed copies, a digital file, an on-site capture or a combination. If two official pages appear inconsistent, state exactly which application you are making and ask which set of instructions governs that channel.
Do not infer the number of photographs from another procedure. Beijing's overseas-license conversion page lists three portraits, while its information-change page lists two. The practical lesson is to use your own service checklist, not to purchase the smallest quantity you have seen mentioned online.
Give the photographer a precise brief
Describe the output in measurable terms rather than asking only for a passport photo or a one-inch photo. Those labels can mean different things in different places. Ask the photographer to check the required dimensions, portrait framing, background, recency and file type against the instruction you supplied.
For digital delivery, ask for the actual compliant file, not merely a screenshot of a preview. For paper delivery, inspect the finished prints instead of approving only the image on the studio monitor. Keep the original digital portrait privately in case the receiving channel requires a different permitted export.
- Purpose: the exact driving-license service and application city.
- Output: paper, digital, or both, with the required quantity.
- Specification: dimensions, background and framing from that service.
- Delivery: the final print or file, checked before submission.
Do not improve the face into a different identity
A licensing portrait is an identification image, not a social-media profile picture. Avoid beauty filters and generative changes to facial features. If lighting or framing is unsuitable, a new photograph is a more reliable option than trying to reconstruct the face or hair digitally.
If you have a question about glasses, headwear or another personal circumstance, ask the receiving authority rather than treating a photographer's usual practice as approval. This article does not invent exceptions or settle how an individual case will be handled. The aim is a recognizable and compliant portrait for the actual service.
Check the final handoff
Open the file that was actually delivered and inspect its format and dimensions. Check that messaging software has not replaced it with a compressed preview. For prints, make sure the requested size has not been changed by automatic fit-to-page printing. These practical checks help identify avoidable format problems; they do not certify acceptance.
