Preparing for a Driving-License Medical Check in China

Book the examination for the right purpose

If you are converting a foreign driving license, identify the driver's medical examination specifically when arranging an appointment. Do not assume that a workplace health check, a general annual check-up or a certificate obtained abroad will serve the same purpose. Ask the receiving vehicle management office which examination and reporting arrangements it accepts for your application.

Shanghai's official conversion guide, updated in June 2026 and checked on 3 October 2026, calls for a driver's physical examination report from a designated local hospital. It describes basic checks including eyesight, hearing and colour vision. That is a Shanghai requirement, not a promise that any hospital nationwide can provide an acceptable report.

Confirm the clinic before making the journey

Ask the intended clinic whether it currently performs examinations for foreign applicants using your type of identity document. A clinic being open does not necessarily mean that the relevant service is available throughout its opening hours. Confirm the examination location and whether you need a booking, without relying on an old map review or another applicant's timetable.

Describe your intended application city and license category. If you have been directed to a particular facility by the vehicle management office, use that instruction when checking the appointment. Keep the clinic's response separate from any confirmation about your overall eligibility; a medical booking is not an accepted license application.

Get identity details right at registration

Ask which original identity documents and other materials the clinic needs. At registration, compare the name and document number entered for the examination with the current document you intend to use for the driving application. If your passport has recently been replaced, raise that fact before a report is created under an obsolete number.

This is an accuracy check, not an invitation to alter official records yourself. Where the clinic and application office use different formats, ask staff how the records will be matched. Retain any legitimate registration reference privately so a later enquiry can identify the correct examination without distributing your complete medical information.

Follow clinical instructions, not travel-forum shortcuts

Ask the clinic for preparation instructions, including whether to bring your usual glasses, hearing aids or relevant medical information. Do not guess whether fasting is needed for the appointment you have actually booked. Follow the clinic's instructions and ask a qualified clinician about any health-related uncertainty.

Tell the examiner truthfully about relevant conditions or aids when asked. Do not stop prescribed medication or try to conceal symptoms to influence an assessment. This article does not provide medical eligibility criteria, diagnose fitness to drive or predict your result. Individual assessment belongs with the qualified examiner and the competent licensing authority.

Understand how the result reaches the application office

Before leaving, ask how the result will be supplied and what, if anything, you must collect or submit. A payment receipt or appointment-completion message may not be the document the licensing office needs. Ask how to identify a completed report and whom to contact if the receiving office cannot locate it.

Check your identity details on any report you are given. If a detail is wrong, request correction through the clinic's normal process; do not edit a scan. If submission is electronic, record the clinic's explanation of the next step rather than assuming that every system has already synchronized.

  • Is the report associated with the correct current identity document?
  • Will the clinic transmit it, provide it to you, or require another step?
  • How should you resolve a missing or incorrectly recorded result?
  • Does the application office need it submitted within a particular period?

Keep the examination separate from the final decision

A completed medical check is one stage, not a guarantee of a Chinese driving license. Keep transport plans flexible until the application and any other required steps are resolved. If the examiner asks for a further assessment, obtain the precise instruction instead of treating an online checklist as permission to ignore it.

For a driving-document preparation enquiry, contact RIDE CN at https://chinadriverslicense.com/contact-us/. Explain your application city and whether the uncertainty concerns the clinic, identity matching or submission. Confirm what assistance is actually available before ordering. Medical decisions remain with qualified professionals, and license approval remains with the authority.
