Review a Chinese License Translation: Dates, Numbers and Restrictions

Review accuracy, not just the appearance of the document

A translation can look professional and still contain a mistaken digit or a misunderstood date. Before approving it, compare the draft with the current original in two passes: first check copied information, then check translated meaning. Keep questions in writing so the final document can be checked against a clear correction list.

Shanghai's official conversion guidance specifies acceptable forms of Chinese translation for that application route. A personal accuracy check does not replace those requirements or certify the translation. Its purpose is narrower: to catch discrepancies while the provider can still clarify or correct them before delivery.

Pass one: check characters exactly

Compare the license number one character at a time, including leading zeros. Then compare the name fields and the issuing authority. Pay particular attention to characters that look alike in a small image, such as O and 0 or I and 1. Use the actual document, not your memory or an old booking profile, as the reference.

Where a field is unreadable, ask for clarification rather than approving a plausible value. If the provider has received several versions of your document, confirm which one the draft uses. A perfectly copied number from an obsolete card can still be the wrong number for the package you intend to submit.

Pass two: check what each date means

A license may display a card issue date, an expiry date and separate entitlement dates. Do not treat every date as interchangeable. Match each translated date to its label on the original. A sequence such as 04/05 can be ambiguous if you do not know the source document's convention; ask the translator to confirm the convention rather than choosing the reading that seems most convenient.

If an entitlement date appears beside a specific vehicle category, make sure it has not been moved into a general license-validity field. When a replacement card has a recent issue date, ask how that fact is represented rather than assuming that it describes the beginning of all your driving experience.

Do not map category letters by appearance

A letter or number used by one licensing system should not be assumed to mean the same thing in another. Ask the translator what the original category permits and how that meaning is conveyed. If there are restrictions, endorsements or a separate legend, include those in the review instead of checking only the largest printed category.

Avoid asking for a more convenient Chinese category because you prefer a particular rental vehicle. Translating an entitlement is not the same as granting one. If you are uncertain which Chinese vehicle category you may obtain, take that question to the receiving authority using the actual details of your license.

Write correction requests that point to one issue

A useful correction note names the page, field and discrepancy. For example: on page one, the expiry field appears to use the issue date from the original; please check the two labels and confirm the correction. This hypothetical wording identifies a checkable issue without instructing the translator to change a fact arbitrarily.

Use one item per concern and distinguish a confirmed copying error from a question about meaning. Avoid sending a sequence of screenshots with unexplained circles. A short numbered list helps the provider respond to every issue and helps you verify that none disappeared during the final revision.

  • Exact field and page reference.
  • What the original appears to show.
  • Whether you are reporting an error or asking for clarification.
  • Which revised version should be treated as final.

Inspect the final package as well as the draft

After corrections, review the final file again. Confirm that all agreed changes remain present and that an unrelated field was not altered. Check that every expected page is included and readable. Where the receiving office requires a specific supporting item or format, compare the delivered package with that instruction rather than with a generic online checklist.

A digital draft and a printed delivery can diverge if the wrong version is sent for production. Keep the agreed final filename or version date, and check the package on receipt. If something is missing, request clarification before attending your appointment instead of attempting a handwritten repair to an official-looking document.

Keep the review within its limits

This process can help you identify a mismatch; it does not validate the original license, determine your eligibility or promise acceptance in every city. Where a point remains unclear, record the uncertainty and ask the party responsible for that decision. Accurate source information matters more than making the paperwork appear uncomplicated.

Do not publish your license number or document images in a public message. Confirm the actual service scope and the receiving authority's requirements before ordering.

Sources and verification

Requirements may differ by city and individual circumstances. Confirm the current requirements with the authority handling your application before you travel or pay for a service.
